Obituary for William Gervais

William Joseph Gervais, 88, of Ottumwa, Iowa and formerly of Clinton, Iowa passed away on September 24, 2014 at the Ottumwa Regional Medical Center. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 1, at Jesus Christ Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Clinton. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30, at Lemke Funeral Homes - South Chapel (2610 Manufacturing Drive). Burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery, Clinton. Lemke Funeral Homes is assisting the family with arrangements.
William was born August 4, 1926 in Terre Haute, Indiana the son of Ernest and Antoinette (Frisz) Gervais. He was a 1944 graduate of Gerstmeyer Technical High School in Terre Haute, Indiana and later acquired his B.A. in Agriculture at Purdue University. He served his country by joining the U.S. Army, serving during WWII. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Mattern on September 26, 1953 in Galesburg, Illinois - she passed away in 2002.
William worked at Clinton Corn Processing as the Assistant Superintendent in Quality Control for over 14 years. He then went on to work for the Scott County Soil Conservation Service for many years.
He was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a dedicated supporter of the church and always volunteered his time for various events and activities.
William enjoyed gardening and also enjoyed playing tennis, especially with his family. Above all he loved his family very much and will be sadly missed.
William is survived by three daughters - Kathleen (Don) Martin of Beckley, WV., Mary (Ken Moss) Gervais of Thornton, CO., Denise (Paul) Rabbass of Ottumwa, IA.; four sons - Thomas Gervais of Hohenwald, TN., John Gervais of Meridian, ID., Philip Gervais of Cedar Rapids, IA., Andrew (Jennifer) Gervais of Des Moines, IA.; fourteen grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one brother - Robert (Mary Ann) Gervais of Healdsburg, CA.; one sister in-law - Patricia Mattern of Antioch, CA. with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding William in death were his parents, his wife Marjorie, one brother - Ernest and one brother in-law Donald Mattern.
Memorials made should be directed to Prince of Peace Parish, Good Samaritan Society - Ottumwa, Iowa or the Benevolent Society - Clinton.
