Obituary for Vicki L. Brondyke

Vicki L. Brondyke passed away unexpectedly on Monday, April 19, 2021 at Mercy One hospital in Clinton, IA. Honoring her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded with no services taking place. Lemke Funeral Homes assisted the family with arrangements.

Vicki was born July 22, 1949 in Clinton, IA to Don and June (Bumann) Brondyke. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1967. During her sophomore year, Vicki was stricken with a spine disease that paralyzed her from her chest down. With perseverance, determination, family love and support she overcame the roadblocks to attending school with a handicap and was able to graduate on time with her class in 1967. Vicki went on to attend Clinton Community College and then the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. She received a Master’s Degree in Speech Pathology.

Vicki chose to leave the Midwest winters and moved to Clinton, South Carolina. She began her career at Whitten Center, a state owned handicap center before moving on to the Laurens School District where she retired in 2005. She returned to the Midwest in 2008 and was currently residing in Camanche, IA.

She was an independent spirit who had a beautiful smile and sense of humor. She loved her family and friends, books and reading, wine and wine club, traveling and re-watching the TV shows from her youth, many in black and white. Even with being confined to a wheelchair for most of her life (before the Americans with Disabilities Act), she learned how to navigate in a world that was not built for people with disabilities.

She is survived by her brother Bob Brondyke and his wife Barb, Clinton, IA and their children David Brondyke (Tierra Benischek) North Liberty, IA; Kate Brondyke (Austin Kutz), Elizabeth, IL; Kurtis Brondyke (Alexandria Gochenour), Warrensburg, MO. A great niece Luella Brondyke (David). Her step mom Charlene Brondyke, step sisters Ethyl Farr, Renee Phillips, step brother Bill Phillips (Sue) and Buddy Phillips. Many Step nieces and nephews and many special friends.

Memorials may be sent to the Felix Adler Children’s Discovery Center, 332 8th Ave. So, Clinton, IA 52732
