Obituary

Early morning on April 16th our beloved sister and aunt, Verna (Verna K) Shields, left us to join Mom and Dad and all our grandparents in Heaven. Due to the CoVid-19 pandemic, there will be no visitation or funeral services. The family is discussing the logistics of a virtual service via Zoom Conferencing at a future date. Honoring her wish’s, cremation rites have been accorded. Lemke Funeral Homes assisted the family with arrangements.

Verna was born March 23, 1958 in Clinton, Iowa, the youngest child and only daughter of Lester Sr. and Virginia (Hardison) Shields. She was educated in the Northeast Community School District where she graduated in 1976. Many years later she went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Ashford University.

Verna worked the longest for ARA Services, filling vending machines at local industrial plants, but more often being the one to tease and provoke the plant employees. Physical ailments forced her into disability in her later years. For many years Verna volunteered with the Crisis Pregnancy Center, the Clinton County Chapter of the American Red Cross, and most recently as a Court Appointed Services Advocate (CASA) by advocating for children living in abusive situations.

Verna faithfully attended River Church and was known and loved by many of her church family.

She is survived by brothers Lester, Jr. (Joanne) Shields of Clinton, Rev. Mike (MonaRe) Shields of Pembroke Pines, FL, Dr. Ric (Sheila) Shields of Tulsa, OK, and nieces and nephews Becky (Shields) Buhman, Brian Shields, Kristi (Shields) Northup, Elizabeth (Shields) Farina, Travis Shields and Tara Shields.

She was preceded in death by both her parents, all grandparents, and many aunts and uncles.

Verna was committed to serving others whether she was teaching Sunday School or as an advocate. She spent many years teaching preschoolers and singing on the Worship Team at Church of the Open Door. That's where I met and served with Verna. My husband knew Verna through his work where she was frequently as part of her job with ARA Services. She was thoughtful and generous. Praying for comfort and peace for her family.

Les and family,
I knew Verna from my days at the Red Cross. Verna loved to tease all of us and we of course loved to tease her back. Her smile and laugh could brighten the day. My deepest sympathy to all of you.

Vernas family,
We were sorry to hear about Verna leaving this world for heaven. I’m sure she is happier, but it leaves a hole in your hearts. I know she had health problems, but kept a sense of humor most of the time. I’m very sorry for your loss, but glad for her gain because now she out of this body and in no pain. Our prayers are with you.

My wife and I had so many fond memories of Verna. Her smile and humor were contagious. She had so much compassion for others and a great zeal for her faith in Jesus. I enjoyed all the years we attended church together with her and mom and dad also. She had a great impact on all of us. I know today she is enjoying her reward in heaven. My condolences to her family. May God Bless you All

During the holidays I was asking my cousin which service was she going to go to at River Church and she said no. BUT Verna seen my post and said she would meet me at River Church at 5pm. After the service she gave me a hug. I went to school with Verna at Northeast class of "77". She will be missed by many.
