Obituary for Robert Goddard

Robert H. Goddard, 97, of Clinton, Iowa, passed away peacefully at Bickford Cottage on Tuesday, February 28, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, at the First United Methodist Church. A visitation will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 3, at Lemke Funeral Homes - South Chapel (2610 Manufacturing Drive). Burial will take place at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Military Honors will be conducted by AMVETS Post 28. Lemke Funeral Homes is assisting the family with arrangements.
Robert was born July 13, 1919 in Clinton to Leroy and Clara (Manning) Goddard. He was married to Maxine Smith, May 4, 1947 in Low Moor. He graduated in 1936 from Goose Lake High School. He also took an electronic course at Clinton Community College. The first twenty-one years of his life were spent on a farm.
Robert is a World War II veteran, serving with the 2nd infantry division. He was awarded the European theater ribbon with five Bronze battle stars for the battles of Normandy, Central France, Brest, the Bulge, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was also awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Presidential Citation, the European Occupational medal and the Bronze Star medal. He was discharged in October 1945 as a staff sergeant.
He retired from DuPont in 1981 after 36 years as an Electrician.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #190, and the Second Infantry (Indian Head) association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a dedicated family man.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Julie (Donald) Powell of Altoona, Iowa and a son, Steven (Ann) of Bloomington, Minnesota and 4 grandchildren: Wesley (Beth) Powell, Kelsey Powell (fiancé Paul Tiberi), Christina Goddard, and Ryan Goddard, and his sister Helen Cooper of Falmouth, MA.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, wife - Maxine, one sister - Berniece and three brothers - Marvin, Harold and Albert.
The family requests memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church in Clinton, IA.
