Richard J. Smith, 48, of Clinton, Iowa passed away at Mercy Medical Center – North on Saturday, December 9, 2017. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 am on Thursday, December 14, at Lemke Funeral Homes – South Chapel (2610 Manufacturing Drive). A visitation will occur from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, December 13, at Lemke Funeral Homes – South Chapel. A private family burial will take place at Clinton Lawn Cemetery at a later date.
Richard was born February 3, 1969 in Dubuque, Iowa the son of James and Veda (Cooksley) Smith. He was a graduate of Clinton High School. Richard was united in marriage to Kristina "Kris" Hansen on March 3, 2003 in Savanna, Illinois.
Richard was a member of the Iowa National Guard, serving for 20+ years. He worked as a process technician for Carlon/Lamson & Sessions Co. for 20+ years and then worked for Custom-Pak for 5 years.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was very mechanically inclined and enjoyed working on cars and all things mechanical. He was always there to lend a helping hand, whether it was electrical or mechanical work or just as a loyal friend. Above all, he loved his family very much, especially his children.
Richard is survived by his mother – Veda of Clinton; his wife Kris of Clinton; one daughter – Melanie Clark of Clinton; one son – John Smith of Clinton; one step-son – Joshua Hansen of Clinton; four grandchildren; five sisters – Becky Cummings of Bellevue, IA, Christine (Jimmie) Schnoor of Camanche, Erma Naeve of Bellevue, IA, Patty (Kevin) Mayberry of Boone, IA and June (Frank) Schlecht of Clinton; two brothers – William (Madonna) Smith of Clinton and Donald (Diana) Smith of Gallatin, TN; with several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding Richard in death were his father and one son - Anthony James Smith
