Obituary for Richard "Dick" Herrity

Richard "Dick" Paul Herrity, 91 of Clinton, Iowa, passed away peacefully at The Alverno on Thursday, January 11, 2018. A Funeral Mass will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 16, at Jesus Christ Prince of Peace Catholic Church. A visitation will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, January 15, at Lemke Funeral Homes – South Chapel (2610 Manufacturing Drive) and one hour prior to the Funeral Mass at the Church. Burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery. Lemke Funeral Homes is assisting the family with arrangements.
Richard was born May, 9, 1926 in Clinton, Iowa the son of Thomas Herrity, DDS and Ruth (McClintock) Herrity. He was a 1944 graduate of Clinton High School and, immediately following graduation, served in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sargent during WWII as a member of 3364th Engineer Base SV CO.
After the war, Richard attended Loras College, receiving his Associates Degree and then went on to the University of Iowa acquiring his Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering. For many years he was employed with Clinton County as a Civil Engineer. Additionally, he was instrumental in setting up the "911" system in Clinton County.
On August 25, 1986 Richard married the love of his life, Dolores (Vogt) Gerdes in Ames, Iowa. "Their" song was "May I have This Dance for the Rest of My Life?".
The couple enjoyed taking bus trips, golfing, dinning out with family and friends, and attending the Showboat and concerts at riverfront. For many years, they were members of the Fulton Country Club. Additionally, they for years, enjoyed vacationing in Florida while visiting Dolores' son, Barry. Until recently, Richard also helped count Sunday collections at Prince of Peace Church.
Left to honor his memory are: his wife – Dolores of Clinton, IA; step-son – Barry Gerdes of Daytona Beach, FL; one sister – Barbara Kemper of Anoka, MN; brother in-laws – Don Walton of Cedar Falls, IA and Jim (Gloria) Coryn of Moline, IL; one sister in-law – Jeanne Herrity of Clinton, IA; as well as, many adoring nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed.
Preceding Richard in death were his parents, three brothers – Gene, James and Gary Herrity, and three sisters – Joan Baumeister, Rita Walton and Carol Coryn.
