On October 14, 1936, a dark-haired baby girl was born in Clinton, Iowa, to John and Laurette (Sanderson) Graf. They named her Patricia Anne.
Patricia Graf was educated in the Clinton grade schools, and graduated from Clinton High School in 1954. She graduated from the former Mount Saint Clare and Marycrest colleges with a degree in elementary education.
She met her husband, Robert E. Horst, in Miles, Iowa, and married him on June 14, 1959. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters, two sons, and 32 years of happiness. Robert died on February 21, 1991.
Pat loved to teach. After 9 years teaching at Miles Consolidated Schools, she spent 26 years teaching 5th grade in Clinton, where she was well respected and beloved by her students and peers.
She was a 50-yr member of Miles First Presbyterian Church, where she was an elder and Sunday school teacher.
Pat was a mentor with Kid's Hope, USA, was a member of Jackson County Retired Teachers and was the first woman to belong to the Miles Area Lions Club. She had also belonged to Miles Literary, Presbyterian Women, and other social groups. She loved her weekly Tuesday morning ladies prayer group.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, two sisters-in-law, Evelyn (Walter Jensen), and Judy (Don Paulsen), and a brother-in-law, Harold Horst.
Those left to honor Pat's memory are her daughters, Laura Horst of Miles, Dr. Sarah and her husband, Jason Edwards of Omaha, Nebraska; sons David Horst and his wife Mary (Daniels) of Blairstown, Iowa and Gerald Horst and his wife Marcy (Jessen) of Vinton, Iowa. She left 12 grandchildren: Erin, Clare (Drew Chapman), Ann (Erik Wolter), Patrick, Nathan (Erin Nolan), Megan, Emma, Ellen, Lily and Grace Horst; and Olivia and Gabriel Edwards; and 4 great-grandchildren: Nora and Julia Chapman and John and Lydia Wolter.
Pat is also survived by one sister, Rosemary (John) Klare; and two sisters-in-law, Arlene (Cecil) Simons and Louise (Harold) Horst of Miles. She leaves nieces, nephews, cousins and friends as well.
Patricia was artistic, funny, smart, gentle and generous. She will be remembered and missed by those who loved her.
