Obituary for Nilsa Mercedes Nieves (Suarez-Cruz)

Nilsa (Mercedes) Suarez-Cruz Nieves, 69, of Clinton, Iowa passed away at the University of Iowa Hospitals on Friday, October 23, 2020. Funeral services occur at 12 pm on Thursday, October 29, at Lemke Funeral Homes – South Chapel (2610 Manufacturing Dr.). A visitation occurs one-hour prior from 11 am until the service hour at the Funeral Home. Burial takes place at the National Cemetery in Rock Island. Lemke Funeral Homes assisted the family with arrangements.

Nilsa was born April 24, 1951 in San Juan, Puerto Rico the daughter of Carmelo and Carmen (Cruz Soler) Suarez Andino. Following High School, she received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Psychology from The Inter American University of Puerto Rico.

Nilsa was united in marriage to Jose Nieves Oliver on March 19, 1971 in San Juan, Puerto Rico – meeting each other at an early age, they were together for a total of 57 years.

Nilsa was a devout Apostolic Christian.

She retired from the AEE Electric Energy Power Company in Puerto Rico after many years of service.

Nilsa was a very gifted and talented artist, she acquired her artistic license in Puerto Rico. She loved making traditional Puerto Rico Cultural crafts. She would also sell these items to customers especially around Christmas. She had a deep love in her heart to help those in-need. She would counsel those whose hearts were searching or those facing difficult life challenges – she was a real spiritual mother. She also enjoyed teaching Bible School and loved sharing the stories of the Bible with her children. She enjoyed tending to her garden, especially her lemon trees and Spinach plants. She also enjoyed cooking and taking care of her family. Within Nilsa heart were sustained virtues of being a very strong woman, a tenacious woman, a very selfless woman and a woman of resolve - never a quitter. These virtues and her strength came from God – she was a true prayer warrior for God.

Nilsa is survived by her husband - Jose Nieves Oliver of Clinton, IA; her daughter - Nilsalys Nieves of Puerto Rico; one son – Rachid (Jessica) Nieves of Kill Devil Hills, NC; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one brother – Carmelo Suarez; with several nieces nephews cousins and friends

She was preceded in death by her parents.
