Obituary for Maxine Ruth Van Norman (Hill)

Maxine Ruth Johanna (Hill) Van Norman, 96, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2020, at a small assisted living facility, Magnolia Manor.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 18, 2020, at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. The Rev. Brent L. Van Norman will be officiating.

Mrs. Van Norman was born April 10, 1924, in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of Rollie and Alice (Hagberg) Hill. She married Rev. George Van Norman on August 18, 1945, in Clinton. Mrs. Van Norman graduated from Lyons High School in 1942. Following high school, she worked for a year at Curtis Bros. & Co. before leaving to attend Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana. While in college she worked for East Side Dairy and then Warner Press. Following college, she worked for the Iowa State Highway Commission in Ames.

Mrs. Van Norman tirelessly worked with her husband in the ministry for 44 years, serving Church of God (Anderson) congregations in Ames, Iowa; LaJunta, Colorado; Eaton, Indiana; Ansonia, Ohio; Burlington, Michigan; Sanford, Michigan; and following retirement, served in an interim capacity at First Church of God in Clinton. After her husband passed away in 2010, Mrs. Van Norman moved to Chesapeake, Virginia, to be near family.

Mrs. Van Norman was an excellent cook, loved baking cookies, and hosting family and friends in her home. She was actively involved in many ministry opportunities, including leading youth groups, choirs, missionary societies and providing exceptional administrative support.

Survivors include her two sons, Dr. Steven A. Van Norman, St. George, Utah; and Rev. Brent L. (Marsha) Van Norman, Chesapeake, Virginia; four grandchildren, Burke (Kat) Van Norman, Abbi Van Norman, Morgan (Ben) Jones, and Chad (Paige) Van Norman; four great-grandchildren (Kelly, Ivy, Wolfgang and Maura); two brothers, Dr. Leonard Hill, Lincoln, Nebraska; and Robert (Carol) Hill, Clinton, Iowa; and many dearly loved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five sisters and daughter-in-law (Colleen).
