Mary Clare Hanrahan, 87, of Charlotte, Iowa passed away at Genesis Medical Center, DeWitt, on Saturday, May 30, 2015. A Funeral Mass will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 5, at Assumption Catholic Church, Charlotte, IA. A visitation will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary service at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, at Lemke Funeral Homes - South Chapel (2610 Manufacturing Drive - west side of Clinton Lawn Cemetery). Burial will take place at Assumption Cemetery. Lemke Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mary Clare was born July 27, 1927 in Charlotte, Iowa the daughter of Charles and Monica (McDermott) Hanrahan. She graduated from Charlotte High School and would continue her education at Mount Saint Clare College and then Mary Crest College acquiring a Bachelors' Degree in Education.
Mary Clare was a school teacher for over 40 years, teaching at various rural schools including Charlotte and Northeast. During her time at Northeast, she was affectionately known as the "Tooth Fairy" due to the fact that she administered tooth extractions to many children who were in need.
Mary Clare loved all the children she taught and as they grew up she kept up with their life endeavors. Mary Clare was very happy to visit with her former students anytime, as many of them came back to see her. She loved her family very much and will be sadly missed by her family and the many friends she met over the 87 years of her life. Finally, it must be said that Mary Clare Hanrahan loved her Irish heritage and was proud to toast her Irish culture.
Mary Clare is survived by two nieces - Patricia Henricksen of DeWitt, IA., Joanne (Tom) Evans of Maquoketa, IA.; five great nieces and nephews, six great great nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Preceding Mary Clare in death were her parents, Urban 'Red' Hanrahan, Edward 'Pink' Hanrahan, Helen McDonald and her lifelong friend Ardon Warner.
