Obituary for Lucienne Catherine Wells

Print
Lucienne “Lucie” Catherine Wells, 57, of Sabula, IA passed away at her home on Saturday, October 27, 2018 after a 3-year battle with ovarian cancer. She was surrounded by her family, looking out on the lake and bird feeders in front of her home, and listening to the Hawkeyes score a touchdown right as she took her final breaths.

Born in DeWitt to John W. and Lucienne “Lulu” G. McGarry, Lucie was third in what is hopefully a long line of awesome women named “Lucienne” that was started in France by her grandmother, Lucienne. No one knows why the first Lucienne decided to also give her daughter the same name, but the tradition stuck with Lucie welcoming the fourth Lucienne (Lucienne Elaine) in 1985 and her son Gilbert bringing the fifth generation of Luciennes into existence in 2016 with the birth of his daughter, Lucienne “Lulu” Marie in 2016.

While most people will remember Lucie for her laugh, love of boating, birds (the desirable ones anyways) and butterflies, gardening, watching the Hawkeyes and Saints play, it is her relationship with her husband and soulmate, Lee that stands out most. Lee and Lucie eloped on June 1, 1982 after only a few months of dating and were together and ridiculously in love for 36 years until her death.

Lucie is survived by her husband and devoted servant, Lee Wells of Sabula, daughter Lucienne Wells of Cedar Rapids, son Gilbert (Dana) Wells of Decorah, granddaughter Lulu Wells, her father John W. McGarry of Clinton, two sisters: Corina (Bill) Andresen of DeWitt and Jacqueline (Tom) Randall of Clinton, and three brothers: Gerald (Maria) McGarry of Goose Lake, John (Karen) McGarry of Clinton, and Patrick (Lisa) McGarry of Bryant.

A service will be held on Friday, November 9, 2018 at River Church in Clinton at 10 am with a luncheon to follow until 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, plants, and food, the family asks that you use that money to make a donation in Lucie’s name to one of the following organizations: National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, H.E.A.R.T. Animal Rescue Team, or River Church.
