Obituary for Lloyd "Nunny" Mangler

Nunny has a new address, it’s HEAVEN! He left this earth Friday, March 22, 2019. His Celebration of Life will be held at the Sabula United Methodist Church Wednesday, March 27, 2019. Visitation will be held from 1 pm to 4 pm where services will be held immediately thereafter. Lemke Funeral Homes assisted the family with arrangements.

He was born September 2, 1931 in Green Island to Albert and Ellen (Yappen) Mangler. He married Patricia Ackley on December 6, 1952 at Fort Eustis, Virginia. Patti died August 30, 1977. Together they had 5 children. He later married Carolyn Giddings, together for 40 years.

After graduating from Sabula High School, he enlisted in the Army serving in the Korean War. After he served with the Army, he was an Engineer on the Milwaukee/Soo railroad for 44 years. He was one that said he never felt like it was a job because he enjoyed it so much. His children’s fondest memory is of him throwing a pack of gum off the engine each time he went through Sabula. He was the Mayor of Sabula from 1965 through 1968.

Some of his favorite things to do was spend time on his farms with family or just tinkering around on them. He enjoyed going to auctions and coming home with his big deals. Such as a huge box he got for a dime and usually there wasn’t anything of value in that box, but it was a good deal. He liked driving around Sabula daily and sitting in his driveway watching friends and strangers drive by. His favorite TV show was Molly B. He loved the polka music and the dancers in the show.

Survivors include his wife Carolyn, his children - Kimberly Tack of Omaha, NE, Pamela Giunta (Paul) of Hazel Green, WI, Candace Direcks (Jeff) of Sabula, Guy Mangler of Clinton and Sherry Stauffer of Sabula, step-son Jeff Giddings (Wanda) of Sabula and step daughter Jennifer Spalding (Harry) of Davenport. 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 2 great great granddaughters, 5 step-grandchildren, 10 step- great grandchildren, sisters - Isabelle Brundage and Mary Sandholdt, his road tripping buddy - Joe Carstensen and his dog - Poko.

He was preceded in death by his wife Patti, his parents, his grandson, Ryan Gendreau, sisters Apama Paddock, Lucille James and brothers Charles, Wayne, Albert (Perg) and Darwin.

The family would like to thank Mercy Hospice for their great care and compassion, Reverend Iola and the support of family and friends.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Sabula United Methodist Church or the Savanna Museum and Cultural Center for the Railroad exhibit – P.O. Box 124 Savanna, Illinois 61074.
