Obituary for Lawrence LeRoy "Larry" Atkinson
Lawrence “Larry” L. Atkinson, 82, of Camanche, Iowa passed away at the University of Iowa Hospitals on Friday, January, 17, 2020. A Funeral Mass occurs at 11 am on Thursday, January 23, at the Church of the Visitation, Camanche. A visitation occurs from 4 pm to 7 pm on Wednesday, January 22, at the Church of the Visitation. Burial takes place at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Lemke Funeral Homes assisted the family with arrangements.
Larry was born February 27, 1937 in Rock Island, Illinois the son of Charles and Honora (O’Brien) Atkinson. He was a 1956 graduate of St. Mary’s High School. Larry was united in marriage to Jacqueline “Jackie” Carber on November 28, 1959 at St. Mary’s Church – celebrating 60 years of marriage last year.
Larry was a member of the Church of the Visitation. He worked as an Industrial Mechanic retiring from Hawkeye Chemical. Additionally, an important part of his life was volunteering for the Camanche Fire Department for nearly 15 years.
Larry enjoyed his time serving on the Camanche Fire Department. He also enjoyed reading and early in life farming. He loved following his childrens and grandchildren’s sporting events and activities. Above all, he loved his family very much, especially his grandchildren.
Larry is survived by his wife - Jackie of Camanche; two sons – Kevin (Missy) Atkinson of Camanche, IA and Kenneth (Debi) Atkinson of Geneseo, IL; one granddaughter – Jaiden Atkinson and three grandsons – Dakota (Erin), Cole and Tanner (Anna) Atkinson; five sisters – Pat (Frank) Greve of Camanche, IA, Nan (Marv) Fiest of Oskaloosa, IA, Mardella Dorrel of Chula Vista, CA, Mary (Onie) Butt of Clinton, IA and Bonnie (Gary) Tebbe of Preston, IA; two brothers – Dan Atkinson of Moline, IL and Steve (Deb) Atkinson of Bettendorf, IA; three brother in-laws Chuck Klinkner of Clinton, IA, Tony Schultz of Camanche, IA and Steve Brown of Myrtle Beach S.C.; 4 sister in-laws – Carol Atkinson of Preston, IA, Linda Atkinson of Lost Nation, IA, Jane Atkinson of Preston, IA and Barb Dodd of Clinton, IA; with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Preceding Larry in death are his parents, four sisters – Fran, Kay, Marg and Rhonda and four brothers - Jack, Joe, Bill and Jim.
