Obituary for Jose Nieves Oliver

Jose Nieves Oliver, 73, of Clinton, Iowa (formerly of Puerto Rico) passed away home on Wednesday, October 27, 2021. Funeral services occur at 11:30 am on Thursday November 4, at Lemke Funeral Homes – South Chapel (2610 Manufacturing Dr.). A visitation occurs 30 minutes prior from 11 am until the service hour at the Funeral Home. Burial takes place at the National Cemetery in Rock Island. Lemke Funeral Homes assisted the family with arrangements.

Jose was born July 28, 1948 in Manhattan, New York the son of Rose Nieves and Jose Oliver Sr. Following High School, Jose served his Country, joining the United State Marine Corp, seeing action during the Vietnam War. During that time he received several accommodations including: Sharp Shooter, Vietnam Service Medal and National Defense Medal.

Jose was united in marriage to Nilsa (Mercedes) Suarez-Cruz Nieves on March 19, 1971 in San Juan, Puerto Rico – meeting each other at an early age, they were together for a total of 57 years until her passing one year ago.

Jose was a devout Apostolic Christian who loved reading the Bible. He earned a degree in Educational Psychology at Central Bible College and a degree in Bible Studies at the Latin American Bible College. He was the Founder and Executive Director of Fundacion Ciudades De Refugio, Inc. located in the Dominican Republic. His Rehabilitation Center focused on those struggling with drug addiction, with a parallel focus helping former Military people struggling with addiction and requiring spiritual help. His mission and lifesaving strategy has been a model for many rehabilitation centers across the Dominican Republic.

Jose enjoyed watching Eagles soar through the sky. He also enjoyed watching football and watching movies – often using the old school terms “did you see that picture”. He was very proud of his U.S. Marine Corp. service. Above all, he loved his family very much and will be incredibly missed.

Jose is survived by his father – Jose’ Nieves Sr.; daughter - Nilsalys Nieves of Florida; son – Rachid (Jessica) Nieves of North Carolina; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his mother and his wife.
