Obituary for John H. Root
John H. Root, 92, of Clinton, Iowa passed away peacefully at Bickford Senior Living Home on Thursday, June 30, 2016. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, at Lemke Funeral Homes - South Chapel (2610 Manufacturing Drive). A visitation will occur from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 5, at Lemke Funeral Homes - South Chapel. Burial will occur at Oakland Cemetery.
John was born July 12, 1923 in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Aurelius C. and Jean (Fallon) Root. He was a 1941 graduate of Clinton High School. John would continue his education at the University of Iowa, the University of Kentucky and the G. I. Army University in Shrivenham, England.
John served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European Theatre of Operations. He was united in marriage to Eleanor Frost on June 17, 1949 at the First United Methodist Church in Clinton, Iowa. He owned and operated A.C. Root Insurance Agency since 1946, until his retirement.
John was a former member of the First United Methodist Church. He was also a fraternal member of the Western Star, Clinton Scottish Rite and the Kaaba Shrine SAE Fraternity. In the early days he was a member of the Clinton Rotary Club, Lions Club, Gyro Club, American Legion, VFW, AMVETS and served on the United Fund Budget Committee, Salvation Army Advisory Board, Mercy Hospital Lay Advisory Board, and the Paul B. Sharer Foundation Board.
John was an avid and life-long Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed playing golf and loved traveling, especially internationally, with his wife. Above all he loved his family very much.
John is survived by one daughter - Jean Lehmkuhl of Clinton, IA; one son - Alan Root of Indianapolis, IN; his grandchildren - Ashley (John) Karn of Clinton, IA, Daniel (Kayla) Root of Fishers, IN, Perry (Jessica) Lehmkuhl of Humble, TX, John Root of Port St. Lucie, FL, Adam Root of Carmel, IN; five great-grandchildren and his very special friend and business partner Julie Bray and her family.
Preceding John in death were his parents and his wife Eleanor.
