Obituary for James Leroy Smith

James Leroy Smith, 84, of Clinton, Iowa passed away at home on Sunday July 7, 2019. Funeral services will take place at 1 pm on Thursday, July 11, at Lemke Funeral Homes – South Chapel (2610 Manufacturing Dr.). A visitation will occur 2 hours prior from 11 am until the service hour at the funeral home. Burial takes place at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Lemke Funeral Homes assisted the family with arrangements.

James was born September 14, 1934 in Clinton, Iowa the son of James P. and Bessie (Comstock) Smith. He was a veteran of the Korean War.

James was united in marriage to Mary Frank on September 29, 1958 in Clinton, Iowa – she passed away in 1982. Later, he married Betty Arey – she passed away in 2014.

James was baptized into the Methodist faith. He worked at John Deere, in the foundry, retiring after 20 years.

He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was a proficient wood worker and beekeeper. He enjoyed socializing with his family and friends at cookouts and the Holiday’s. Above all, he loved his entire family very much and will be sadly missed.

James is survived by his children - George (Pam) Kramer of Clinton, IA; Bob (Brenda) Kramer of Rock Island, IL; James (Melody) Smith of Clinton, IA, Rick (Laura Mae) Ledesma of Lexington, MO, Teresa (Greg) Thomson of Clinton, IA, Teresa Jewell of Clinton, IA, Deb Smith of Clinton, IA, Danny Arey of Clinton, IA, Jake Arey of Indianola, IA, Laura Lou Arey of Clinton, IA; 22 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren (with 1 on the way); 4 great-great grandchildren (with 1 on the way); with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Preceding James in death were his parents; his first wife Mary, his second wife Betty; his sisters – Norma Winter, Sally Rose Bieber, Infant sister – Joanne; his brother – Jack Smith and Leo Smith; daughter – Linda Kramer; son – Edward Arey; son in-law Richard Jewell; 3 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild.
