Obituary for Grace E. Barr

After enjoying 101 years of good health, Grace E. Barr passed away peacefully at the Alverno, following a brief illness, on March 20, 2016. Grace has been in the loving care of the Alverno Memory Lane Unit in Clinton, Iowa since August of 2015. Prior to that, Grace was a resident of the Sarah Harding Home in Clinton.
Grace was born December 4, 1914 in Montrose, Kansas the daughter of Calvert and Ollie McGehee. Her early years were spent in Fairbury, Nebraska, she later moved to Blue Island, Illinois. She was a graduate of Blue Island Community High School. Grace was united in marriage to Howard Barr on September 2, 1935. They were together for almost 40 years.
Grace was employed in retail sales at Carson Pierie Scott in the Chicago area, and retired to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1973. She relocated to Clinton in 1999 to be closer to her son David. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and was active in the church choir, the bell choir and the "Clin-Tones". She was an avid quilter, hand piecing many quilts, table runners, and other projects for family, friends and church bazaars. She loved flowers of all kinds, and loved the color pink.
Grace is survived by her two daughters - Betty (Tom) Knawa of Huntley, IL and Laurie (Larry) Conrad of Felton, CA; one son - David (Bonnie) Barr of Clinton, IA; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren with several nieces, nephews and friends.
Preceding Grace in death were her parents, her husband Howard, two grandchildren, one brother and one sister.
Lemke Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements with a private internment alongside her husband at the Chester T. French Memorial Mausoleum in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A Memorial service will be held at the Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church in Huntley, Illinois on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 11 a.m. Memorials may be directed to the charity, church or hospice of your choice or to the family.
