Obituary for Glenn Edward "Ed" Giese
Glenn Edward ‘Ed’ Giese, 91, found peace on December 16, 2020 at his home in Camanche, IA. Honoring his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded with private services taking place at a later date. Lemke Funeral Homes assisted the family with arrangements.
Ed was born April 16, 1929 in Hahnaman Township, near Tampico, Illinois, the son of Henry Ehler and Hansine ‘Tena’ (Jacobsen) Giese. He graduated from Rock Falls High School in 1947. On December 26, 1949, Ed married Georgia Haring in Clinton, Iowa.
When first married, Ed was driving trucks. After the arrival of his son, he decided that a career change was needed and landed at DuPont in 1951. He became an electrician which meant no more night shifts. DuPpmt made him an offer he couldn’t refuse, and he retired at age 56. Retirement meant more time for all the people and things he loved most: more quality time with family, especially to be involved in the lives of his grandchildren, golf, fishing, Hawkeyes football and travel. He often said, “Your mother drug this country boy to more places than I would ever have dreamed”. He faced his final days just as when diagnosed with macular degeneration: “You have to play the cards you’re dealt.”
Those left to honor his memory include his son Eldon and daughter-in-law Billie (Tieso) Giese of Fond du Lac, WI; and his daughter Christine and son-in-law Michael Powell of Papillion, NE.; his five grandchildren, Christina Giese and her partner John Kellbach, Jody (Mark) Mentele, Jessica (Scott) Commo, Jon (Cheryl) Powell, and Kari (Andrew) Zehren; his ten great grandchildren, Rueben (Amanda) Westra, Evan and Mariah Loehr, Lee Kellbach, Malia and James Mentele, Sydney and Sophia Commo, Henry and Claire Zehren; his great great grandchildren Wyatt Manning and Viera Westra; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by the love of his life Georgia, his parents, and siblings John, Lillian, Florence, Sylvia and Frances Giese.
Ed thanks all of you that joined him at his 90th birthday and said that’s all the celebration that he needed. An added word of advice-- he shared with us, “If there is something you want to do, do it while you can”.
Ed coached and umpired Little League baseball for many years and asked that memorials go to Clinton Little League Baseball. They may be sent to the family.
The family thanks the countless friends, nieces and nephews that have included Ed in their lives, chauffeured him to appointments, and helped him to live out his dream of remaining in his home for as long as possible.
The family also thanks Mercy One Hospice, Laura Meyer, and Laurie Geary for their loving care.
