Obituary for Fred J. Roe

Fred J. Roe, 87, passed away at Mercy Medical Center on August 27th, 2013. A funeral mass will take place on Friday, August 30th, at 12:00 p.m. at The Canticle, 843 13th Avenue North, in Clinton, Iowa. A visitation will occur on Thursday, August 29th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Lemke Funeral Homes - South Chapel (2610 Manufacturing Drive - west side of Clinton Lawn Cemetery). Burial will immediately follow the funeral mass at the Rock Island Arsenal with Military honors rendered. Lemke Funeral Homes is assisting the family with arrangements.
Fred was born November, 7th, 1925 in Clinton, Iowa the son of Fred and Anna (O'Keefe) Van Vuren. Fred attended Clinton High School, however at the age of 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving during WWII. Upon his return from service, Fred finished high school at Clinton High.
On March 30th, 1947, Fred was united in marriage to Elinor R. Vaughn at St. Patrick's Church in Clinton, Iowa.
Fred was a lifelong builder and contractor, owning "Fred J. Roe General Contactors". He built or remodel many notable buildings in Clinton including the Canticle, Eagle Lodge Pavilion, the Clinton County Court House, Kmart as well as many others in the area. His building skill however was not limited to Clinton; he traveled around the Country building or overseeing the completion of commercial buildings. His notable commercial clientele included the Denny's Restaurant chains, Kmart chains, many schools, medical complexes and many more commercial buildings across the United States. Somewhere in all of his building projects he found time to be the President of the Iowa Home Builders Association and acquired his pilot's license. In his later years he was better known in the area for his annual block parties which took place the first weekend in October.
Fred is survived by his three daughters - Sherry (Philippe Leroy) Roe of Cockeysville, MD., Hilary (David B. Stevens) Roe of Maple Grove, MN., Nancy Roe of Palm Springs, FL; one son- Jay Roe of Iowa City, IA., five grandsons; one brother - Uly "Bud" Roe of Las Vegas, NV.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Elinor, one son - F. Jon Roe and one grandson - Leighton and two sisters.
