Evelyn was born on December 12, 1921, on the family homestead, Lincoln Township, Scott County, Iowa. She was the daughter of James and Amelia (Adair) Hirl and was baptized into the Catholic faith on December 28, 1921 in St. Anne's Catholic Church, Long Grove, Iowa. Evelyn moved with her family from the farm during the Great Depression to Princeton, Iowa. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1940 and attended Mt. St. Clare College where she earned her teacher's certificate. She then taught in one-room schools of Pleasant Hill and Grassy Lane in Scott County. During WWII, Evelyn worked summers making pup tents for the military. She belonged to Prince of Peace Parish. She served as the secretary for the Clinton Right to Life organization. In her retirement years, she also made hundreds of rosary beads and sent them to missions around the world.
On August 14, 1945, Evelyn married Edwin L. Michl in Princeton, Iowa. He died on November 7, 1994.
Evelyn's greatest joys were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is survived by twelve children: Joseph of Corvallis, Oregon; Anne (Douglas) Schmidt, Clinton; Mark (Renee), Milan, Illinois; Geoffrey (Pam Novy) of Ormond Beach, Florida; James, San Jose; Mary of Moline, Illinois; David (Teri) of Moline, Illinois; Martin (Dianna Cooper) Clinton; Susan (Michael) Perez of LaSalle, Illinois; Monica (Bonnie Dansby) of Pensacola Beach, Florida; and Molly (Brian) Bauer of Mukwonago, Wisconsin; Carlos Barajas, foster son, of Moline; 26 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
