Obituary for Ed Nemmers

Ed Nemmers, 85, of Clinton, Iowa passed away on December 19th, 2012 at The Alverno Nursing Home, Clinton, Iowa. Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 26th, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Lemke Funeral Home - South Chapel (west side of Clinton Lawn Cemetery). A memorial mass celebrating Ed's life will be held on Thursday, December 27th at 11:00 am at The Canticle, 843 13th Avenue North, in Clinton.
Ed was born on July 2nd, 1927 in Evanston, Illinois. He was the son of Edward and Gertrude (Canfield) Nemmers. He was married twice; Helen (Popiolek) and Alice (Ehredt).
Ed grew up in Evanston and attended St. George High School, and always anticipated his yearly high school reunion in the Chicago area even after he moved to Clinton. He owned several businesses in Chicago as well as being co-owner of Gateway Supply in Clinton several years ago.
His joy and passion was baseball. Ed was a farmhand with the Chicago Cubs, but an injury ended his baseball dream. Ed was a baseball scout for the Cubs as well as the now Los Angeles Angels and his scouting brought him to many Midwest League ballparks. Riverview Stadium (now Ashford University Field) was his favorite right here in Clinton.
Ed moved here in 1985 after selling his Chicago business and became an active member not only in the community but also with the Clinton baseball team (first, the Giants, now the Lumberkings). He served on the Lumberkings Board of Directors and was elected to the positions of President and Vice President with separate tenures. Ed enjoyed going to the game, not only as a fan, but also as a person who wanted everyone to enjoy the love of baseball and the shared experience of a ballgame.
Ed always enjoyed talking about baseball, whether it was the Chicago Cubs, the Clinton Giants/ Lumberkings or any other team. In honor of his love of baseball, at his visitation, if you would like to wear your favorite baseball team's hat or shirt, even if it is the White Sox, it is welcome.
He is survived by his two sons - Denis Nemmers, Prospect Heights, Illinois and Ed Nemmers, Skokie, Illinois; and two beautiful grandchildren (Emily-Claire and Hannah).
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, James, and his wives, Helen and Alice.
