Obituary for Donald "Don" Simmons

Donald Eugene Simmons, 86, of DeWitt, Iowa went home to the Lord on Friday November 17, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, November 24, at Lemke Funeral Homes – South Chapel (2610 Manufacturing Drive). A visitation will occur two hours prior to the funeral service on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Lemke Funeral Homes assisted the family with arrangements.
Don was born on January 27, 1931, the son of Hazel and George Simmons. Don served his Country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Alaska in the early 1950's, learning his future truck driving trade. Following his service, he started his truck driving career and retired from Determann Industry in the 1990's. Don, not well suited for retirement, began driving a truck again for Dwayne Johnson Trucking until he was 79 years of age.
Don was united in marriage to Joyce Berner on December 15, 1973. They have been each other's soulmates, rock and best friends ever since.
Don cherished his time spent with his children, grandchildren, and he glowed with joy when spending time with his great- grandchildren.
Don is survived by his wife Joyce, his children - Donette Valley, Scott Simmons, Rhonda Smith, Dean (Michelle) Pingel, Karla (Jerry) Anderson, Brenda Hook, and his very special puppy Muffy; his grandchildren – Brent (Monica) Smith, Matthew (Kelli) Smith, Jeremy (Whitney) Anderson, Jason (April) Anderson, Steven (Kayleigh) Pingel, Jessica (Ryan) Brandon, Jimmy Valley, Tyler Hook and Marcus Hook.
Preceding Donald in death were his parents, 1 son – Terry, 1 son in-law- Roger, 1 daughter in-law - Narda Pingel, 2 sisters and 4 brothers.
