Crystal Tompkins, 97, of Clinton, Iowa passed away at the Alverno on Tuesday, January 23, 2018. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, January 26, at Lemke Funeral Homes – North Chapel (2304 N. Second Street). A visitation will occur two hours prior to the funeral service on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Lemke Funeral Homes assisted the family with arrangements.
Crystal was born January 29, 1920 in Fulton, Illinois, the daughter of Earl and Gertie (Farwell) Funnell. She attended the Clinton school system. She was united in marriage to Robert Tompkins on December 18, 1937 at the First Methodist Church, Clinton.
Crystal was a homemaker. She was a member First Church of God for 70 years and during that time she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Women's Missionary Society. Upon the closure of the First Church of God, she faithfully attended the First Baptist Church. She was also an active member of the PTA as her children grew up.
Crystal was a dedicated wife and mother always focusing on her family and their activities. She enjoyed camping, baking and playing cards. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and going out to eat with friends. Later on in life, she enjoyed playing Bingo. Above all, she loved her family very much especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Crystal is survived by her three daughters – Linda (Chuck) Byers of Clinton, IA, Phyllis (Jim) Hall of Indianapolis, IN, Nancy VanZuiden of Fulton, IL; two sons – John "Duane" (Libby) Tompkins of Lebanon, TN, and William "Bill" (Debbie) Tompkins of Camanche, IA; one daughter in-law - Connie Tompkins of Glendale, AZ; 14 grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; 1 brother – Richard (Carole) Funnell of Neenah, WI; one brother in-law Gail Mauck of Clinton, IA; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 1 son – Larry, two son in-laws Kevin VanZuiden and Kenny Vogel; 1 granddaughter – Rebecca; 1 sister – Phyllis Paris.
