Obituary for Charles "Reke" Higbee

Charles "Reke" Higbee, 90, of Clinton, Iowa passed away on December, 15th, 2012 at Prairie Hills Senior Living Home, Clinton, Iowa. Cremation rights have been accorded with a memorial service to be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 20th, at Lemke Funeral Homes - South Chapel (West side of Clinton Lawn Cemetery). Visitation will take place 2 hours prior to the memorial service from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date. Lemke Funeral Homes is assisting the family with arrangements.
Charles was born on June 19, 1922 in Kirkwood, Illinois. He was the son of Virgil and Mary Edith (Van Cleave) Higbee. He married Betty E. Sword on September 4th, 1949 in Clinton Iowa.
Growing up Charles helped his Dad farm. He joined the United States Army on November 11th, 1942, serving in Germany in the 329th Combat Engineering Battalion of the 104th Timber wolf Division. He landed in Cherbourg, France on September 7th, 1944, he also saw active combat in Holland and throughout Germany; making contact with a Russian Division east of the Mulde River on April 26th, 1945.
After his Army service, he worked in construction for McKenzie Quarry , Determann Blacktop Inc. and Foley construction. He Retired from the Operating Engineers Local 537 on January 1st, 1985.
Charles enjoyed spending winter in Florida in his motor home and camping with friends. He also enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and working on projects in his garage at home.
He is survived by his wife Betty, one daughter - Julie Campbell of Anamosa, Iowa; one son - Allen (Chris King) Higbee of Clinton, Iowa; three grandsons - Alexander (Tiffany)Campbell of Savanna GA., Ian (Amber) Campbell of Caldwell, Texas, Brandon King of Clinton; 3 great grandchildren, and one sister - Anne.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and 4 brothers.
