Obituary for Carol Ann Garvey (Buelow)

Carol Ann (Buelow) Garvey, 82, of Maquoketa, Iowa (formerly of Clinton) passed away at the Jackson County Regional Health Center on Thursday August 13, 2020. Funeral services will take place at 12 pm on Saturday, August 22, at Lemke Funeral Homes - South Chapel (2610 Manufacturing Drive). A visitation occurs two-hours prior from 10 am until the service hour at the funeral home. Burial takes place at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Lemke Funeral Homes assisted the family with arrangements.

Carol was born August 23, 1937 in Clinton, Iowa the daughter of Emil and Elsie (Hitchcock) Buelow. She was a 1955 graduate of Clinton High School. She was united in marriage to Wally Garvey on November 20, 1982.

She lived in many places during her lifetime, including Santa Clara, California, Stoddard and La Crosse, Wisconsin, and Daytona Beach, Florida. She lived in Las Cruces, New Mexico, for over 20 years before returning home to Clinton after her husband, Wally Garvey, passed away. She spent her final years living in Maquoketa, Iowa.

Carol did secretarial work for Ampex in Santa Clara, California, in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She was a security guard and watchman for Burns International Security Services in Vernon County, Wisconsin, in the late 1970s. Carol was a member of Local 303 of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union while working at Clinton Garment in Clinton, Iowa, during the early 1980s. She attended the International Business College in Las Cruces, where she earned a degree in Computer Accounting in September of 1988 (she had perfect attendance and perfect grades, much to the chagrin of her teenage son, Kerry, whom she loved to tease about it as he had neither). She put her degree to work as a bookkeeper for Sun Village Development Center, H&R Block, and other companies for many years. After retiring, she would occasionally work as a waitress.

Carol loved dogs - running her own business “Perky Poodle Palace” raising Toy and Teacup Poodles in Clinton and Las Cruces for many years. She enjoyed bowling, competing in many state and national tournaments. She also enjoyed quilting, collecting unicorn knick-knacks (though she started reducing her collection many years ago due to the overwhelming amount of unicorn bric-a-brac she owned), spending time with her children and grandchildren, and in her later years traveling across the country with her companion Dewayne Thompson of Madison, Wisconsin, and her beloved Pug Dakota and later Sonny.

Carol is survived by 2 sisters - Joanna Lee (Bill) Bramley of Navarre, Ohio and Lyn Buelow of Fulton, Illinois; a daughter - Claudia (Rick) Jensen of Las Cruces, New Mexico; 2 sons - Rocky (Tonya) McMahon of Elvira, Iowa, and Kerry (Yvette) McMahon of Cedar Park, Texas; 3 grandchildren - Ashley (Brandon) Arroyo of Brush, Colorado, Rocky (Dana) McMahon of Clinton, Iowa, and Darian Hallbauer of Albuquerque, New Mexico; seven great-grandchildren and five step-children (including Jay (Cindy) Garvey of Clinton).

She was preceded in death by her husband Wallace "Wally" Archie Garvey (1937-2006), her parents Emil John Buelow (1905-2000) and Elsie Christine Hitchcock Buelow (1912-1987), 2 brothers - Ronald Gene Harken (1932-2006) and Dean Allen Buelow (1939-1939), a sister - Janice Rae Daggett (1934-2006), and a granddaughter - Amber Roberts (1989-1990).

Memorials made can be directed to the family.
