Obituary for Carol Ann Garrels

Carol Ann Garrels, 72, of Clinton, Iowa passed away surrounded by her loved ones at Mercy Medical Center – North on Wednesday, September 19, 2018. A funeral service will be held at 11:45 am on Saturday, September 22, at Lemke Funeral Homes – South Chapel (2610 Manufacturing Drive). A visitation will occur on Saturday from 10 am until the time of service at the Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Clinton Lawn Cemetery following the service. Lemke Funeral Homes assisted the family with arrangements.

Carol was born October 29, 1945 in Clinton, Iowa the daughter of Herman and LaVern (Smith) Workman. She was united in marriage to Bernard Garrels on February 2, 1963 in Fulton, Illinois – married 55 years.

Carol was a loving homemaker and a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Carol found great joy in being a caring wife and mother. She was involved in Cub Scouts and Brownies, enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and liked many other activities including camping. She loved all of her fur babies (dogs) she had throughout her life. Carol was diagnosed with M.S. in 1980 and bound to a wheelchair in 1995. She was courageous in her battle with M.S. and never let it hinder her passion for life. She handled life with grace and a positive spirit. Carol was known for her quick wit and determination with everything she did and enjoyed greatly the company of friends and family. Her loving husband, Bernard stood by her side through her health struggles. Their love and commitment towards each other never wavered. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Carol is survived by her mother – LaVern Workman of Clinton, IA; her husband Bernard Garrels of Clinton, IA; daughter – Tammy Garrels of Cedar Rapids, IA; son – Mark (Pamela) Garrels of Onalaska, WI; 5 grandchildren – Mason (Yan) Sweat of Coralville, IA, Morgan (Tina) Sweat of Cedar Rapids, IA; Courtney Garrels of Winona, MN, Marissa Garrels of Winona, MN, Mackenzie Garrels of Mankato, MN; brother – Michael (Julie) Workman of Ripon, WI; her dear friend and cousin Debbie Dunlavy who often visited and cared for her as well several nieces, nephews, other cousins and friends.

Preceding Carol in death was her father – Herman.

Memorials can be made directly to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in Carol’s name.
