Obituary for Albert Chase

Albert David Chase, 77, of DeWitt, Iowa passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving care givers, on Monday, June 19, 2017. A private burial took place on Thursday, June 22, at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Lemke Funeral Homes assisted with the arrangements.
Albert was born March 26, 1940, in Clinton County. Albert's mother passed away when he was just 3 years old, leaving Albert to be raised by others. However, at the age of 5, Albert was diagnosed with mental retardation and taken away to a mental institution where he would enter a system of segregation, poor living conditions and a society where negative attitudes and bias towards the mentally challenged were, at that time, unfortunately very real.
After 51 years in an institution, loving help would arrive for Albert in the form of many caregivers who took the time to help Albert become a functioning member of society, relocating him into a real home of love, understanding and patience. Albert's last 23 years, especially his final 3 years, were full of joy and happiness.
Albert was a very kind and loving soul. His go to meal was always the Whopper meal from Burger King. Albert never met a stranger he didn't like, and everyone loved Albert.
Although burial was private, please take a moment of your day to reflect, pray and perhaps donate to the care of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
